Sketchy... sorry

This is a public service message for anyone who cares to listen (or read!!)......

My week at work has been complete H*ll. Without giving too many details, due to legality issues. I would just like to say to every parent.....

GET INVOLVED AND KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON IN YOUR CHILD'S SCHOOL SYSTEM. KNOW THE POLICIES ON ZERO TOLERANCE, OR FOR THAT MATTER, IF THEY EVEN HAVE ONE.

We have an issue presently that involves criminal charges against a minor child in the school system I work in. It is an EXTREMELY disturbing issue. He was scheduled to return to the very same school, from where he left in handcuffs, on Monday.

Why, you ask.... because the Bd of Ed that makes these "disciplinary" decisions held a meeting that was not made aware to the parties involved, and some of the "trustworthy" members did not know about the hearing either, (you only need a majority to hold a meeting) the few that were present were not allowed to know about the criminal charges, because the child is a minor, they were only privy to the disciplinary record (which was sketchy) and therefore they made a rushed, unintelligible decision, to allow the child to return to his home school, of which the criminal offense was focused on.

Thankfully, with a very united faculty, many union meetings, emails, phone calls, and the state union getting involved over the last few VERY LONG days... as of 6pm this evening, I received the phone call from my union president to inform that...

We have bought ourselves enough time for the Board to reconvene and "reconsider" the VERY LEGAL DECISION they previously made to have the child return on Monday. It is a very complicated, long, legal process to overturn a legally binding Board decision. I learned a lot about the terrible process this week.

So I just want to say... if you are a parent and you value the safety of your children, or if you are a school employee and value the safety of yourself and your students...

KNOW THE POLICIES OF YOUR SCHOOL DISTRICT. And ask your children questions all the time... know who the troubled children are, know when they are suspended, ask why. If you can...

I will be sitting down with my central administration, soon. I want to know what I need to do to make some policy changes, and add the policies needed to protect myself and your kids. This is a scary society we live in... WE NEED TO BE AWARE.

Oh Gosh. That sounds scary and not fun at all. I'm sorry you have to deal with that. How can we expect our teachers to go to work and do their jobs if they don't even feel safe? It sickens me. Hang in there.

Wow...sounds like a rough week.
I hope things get resolved for you. In this day and age, you have to be conscious of how volatile the classroom situation can be and take it seriously. Good luck with your fight.

Sounds rough! Hope you can get some rest this weekend.

All week we have been wondering what is going on with our kids. I had three suspended yesterday. Two are students I would have never imagined getting in the kind of trouble they got into.

Is spring break coming soon?

Terrible! I don't understand why we've got to protect the privacy of one potentially dangerous individual at the expense of untold numbers of innocents in his or her path.

The world is upside down.

I am amazed at what I'm told by my son sometimes. School is scary right now.

Thanks for the reminder about how important it is for no one to stick their head in the sand.

Sorry your week has been such hell and hope that the right decision prevails for all.

My thoughts are with you. I too work in the school system and at times, it is a scary place to be. Hope all works out well for all involved.
